Week 11 - Roadshow

15/11/2017

And the finale comes to SIGHT Camp 2017 as the teams play out their coda. It is the last chance for them to showcase their concepts and prototypes before ideas are chosen to progress to next semester. There was a plethora of designs and models, from skin care products to eye tracking games to a hand puppet theatre. Part of the perks of having teams prototyping snacks is that we get to taste some really tasty and one of a kind snacks!

We are extremely grateful for our guest critics that came in to give invaluable feedback to our Campers. Therefore we would like to thank Prof. Ajay Joneja (IELM), Mr. Derek Lam (CEI), Prof. Vincent Li (MAE) and Mr. Donny Siu (SAO). Our gratitude also goes to Ms. Celia Chow, Ms. Winkie Fung, Ms. Yetta Ma, Ms. Calfee Tam and Ms. Stella Tseng, occupational therapists who came all the way from the Red Cross JFK Centre in Pok Fu Lam.

Stayed tuned for the results of SIGHT Camp 2017!

Mickey shows off his mochi
Henry on the throne
Campers react to pitches
Let's play doctor
After all this time, Pitch Night was finally here! Our teams showed off their ideas and prototypes, so thank the Sevens that we have 2 teams working on snacks so that we could all have some tasty snacks along the way, there were sachima, mochi, cookies...yum. Beyond snacks, other project teams came up with other ideas such as paper soap, eye trackers, surrogate hands and more!

The teams have now 2 weeks to hone their ideas for their Roadshow on 15/11, stay tuned for that!

8 weeks and counting and still prototyping! As the Campers gear up for their pitch on All Saint's evening, they shall proceed with their sacred quest. Davy is with us again showing the ropes of Arduino and LittleBits programming, and we go retro in style and back into black and white goodness. Stay tuned for Week 9's project pitch!

Week 06/07 - Advanced Prototyping

In the midst of midterms we are stepping up a gear here at SIGHT Camp, moving away from cardboard this time and onto various tools to help our Campers with their project ideas.

From software to hardware, from apps to 3D modelling to 3D printing, we had it all in these two weeks. Our SIGHT Leaders Davy and Rubaiyat showed the Campers the ropes of Thunkable, a software prototyping tool from MIT; Andrew from the Rooftop Republic set the teams up with Canvanizer; Malinda went through 3D modelling and printing & Joel went over the basic machinery of saws, drills and milling machines.

Week 05 - Quick Prototyping

It was time to get our sharp razors and steely rulers out for our quick prototyping workshop by our very own Malinda! Playing with cardboard has become a bit of a tradition here at SIGHT Camp and beyond, as it is one of the quickest ways to showcase an idea. This year's workshop is the first one to go on without any bloodshed, so thank the Sevens for that, as well as our much "improved" health and safety procedures. (We're just glad that no-one had cut themselves!)

The Campers also got their big reveal as they found out which team there are assigned to!
This also kick starts a series of prototyping training for our Campers to prepare them for their project pitch and concluding Roadshow at the end of SIGHT Camp, and we'd be moving on to heavier weaponry in the weeks to come, stay tuned!

Second and third, we also had our site/SIGHT visits to our local partners, in Mui Wo for the mobile clinic project, and to Pok Fu Lam, to HK Red Cross John F. Kennedy Center for our assistive technology project!

On our second week we are breaking down the problems to our Campers already, well, the overseas ones at least. Our Leaders (names in brackets) introduced and unpacked the projects from Cambodia:

Hygiene & education in Siem Reap (Elizabeth & Fernando) & Khmer Eats: Healthy snacks for slum children in Phnom Penh (Issei & Nadiya) and in Guizhou: A social enterprise with Moringa - Phase 2 (Davy, along with Brian, Caroline, Fizzy and Grace). You can see our make-shift tippy-tap in action in the photos!

The Campers will be visiting local partners (i.e. SIGHT/Site visits) in the coming 2 weeks, stayed tuned for updates on that front, especially via our Instagram Stories!

We are steaming full speed ahead here at SIGHT Camp, and not even the Sabbath shall put a halt to us. Campers came back for an afternoon of fun, collaboration and self-discovery through games, from waltzing around in chairs to throwing a particularly bouncy ball around.

Keeping with local traditions, we also had our first ever Semester-Start Dinner (開Sem飯, literally translated as "Open Semester Dinner") at the local dai pai dong in Hang Hau! We wish everyone at SIGHT and beyond a great semester ahead, and for the students 過三爆四*!

*A local Cantonese phrase meaning to have a GPA above 3 or even exceeding 4.

    SIGHT CAMP

is a 1-semester long non-credit bearing program, where SIGHT Campers are exposed to a myriad of global health issues via engaging with NGOs. Campers will follow-up on issues they find interest in, and from them develop solutions to solve these issues. The Camp is an accelerator of these ideas, providing workshops on design thinking, prototyping, product development, etc. The best ideas will stay and become fully-fledged SIGHT Projects in the Spring Semester.
