Yes!! As you can see in the banner above, we are looking for first years to join us!

At SIGHT Camp you will confront real health-related problems presented by NGOs or government partners. You will be empowered with mindsets and skills to innovate health technologies in low-resource settings. The selection of potential Campers is based mostly on students’ commitment to SIGHT and skill sets relevant to the projects, rather than academic performance. While we have a technical focus at SIGHT, we look beyond for skills that can bring sustainability and a human touch to our projects.

P.S. We love math students at SIGHT, but if you spot something wrong by how we've defined X, please do not write to us to complain by sending us an email to [email protected] titled "I am good at math and you did something wrong", c'mon, why would you do that...

EMPATHY & IDEATION

Our only Wednesday night session ever as we had to make way for Mid-Autumn celebrations. Campers got a taste of the problems in Cambodia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and China, and generated nearly a thousand Post-Its!

Our special thanks to Prof. Siu-woo Cheung, who shared with us his expertise and also personal collection of Batik art! All the stations were manned by SIGHT Leaders, Alumni and friends, a special shout-out to them all!

SIGHT CAMP 2016 KICK-OFF

And it's all back to square (week) one for us all, as we kick start this year's SIGHT CAMP!

We had a great evening with the new batch of Campers, with Prof. Chau giving an overview of the projects and our SIGHT Leaders sharing their experience from last year. We also had a some ice-breaking games to get everybody to know each other.

This year we had a much bigger batch of 50 students and with 5 projects:

Early detection of diabetic retinopathy in Indonesia - Phase 2
Electronic Health Record System - Phase 3
Low-cost healthy snacks for children in Cambodia
Assistive technology for people with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and other rare genetic diseases in Hong Kong

All good things must come to an end...sob...but end it must

Our SIGHT Camp 2015 came to a close last Thursday and our Campers gathered for one last time this semester. The Campers got their graduation certificates and the winners for the Best Camp Idea and the Campers' Choice Award were finally unveiled! The winners are:

Everything comes together on the night of Final Presentation, as our Campers showcased their efforts they've made over the semester. To freshen up your memories on our projects, here's a quick reminder:

We are very glad that our Campers have risen to the challenge and presented many great ideas, including:

An image-regconition and processing algorithm diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy using a smartphone-based funds camera
A database system to keep track of diabetic retinopathy patients
A joystick keyboard to allow myopathic patients type Chinese
A soy milk snack alternative for kids in the Cambodian slums
An improved stove to minimise fluoride contamination from cooking fumes
Using Moringa seeds to purify fluoride-contaminated water

Despite all these great ideas, not all shall proceed to the next semester as SIGHT projects. So stay tuned to see which team is going to make it!

Week 10

6/11/2015

Week 10 is another intensive week for our Campers, it was yet another test for them, in the form of a road show! For their second last test, they had to present their prototypes and ideas to internal advisors from HKUST. We are very thankful for the participation by Prof. Pedro Sanders (CSE), Prof. Ajay Joneja (IELM), Prof. Terrence Yee (CBME), Prof. Siu-woo Cheung and Mr. Malinda Abeynayake (IELM) in the roadshow, giving our Campers valuable suggestions and some tough questioning to make sure their ideas are ready for the Final Presentation next next week!

Week 9

30/10/2015

Week 9 was a blast for us, it was the second instalment of the "When Idea Meets Frugal Technology" Series, this time, it's our very own Thilina teaching us Quick Prototyping, with cardboard of course. Cardboard you say? YES! CARDBOARD!

You'll be amazed by how much you can make with just cardboard! Just to the left, you can see our Jonathan standing on a platform made from cardboard, and who could miss the cardboard lamp shade hanging from the ceiling?

Just to warm things up we started with making some Post-Its holders with cardboard, and for the second stage, we went crazy making a drug dispensing solution. One team decided to follow a more Halloween themed path and made a bridge with Gummi Bears walking on top. One bear was decapitated with its body on the ledge and head down below. It was a great night for everyone.

This concludes the "When Idea Meets Frugal Technology" Series, and the teams will be showcasing their ideas the coming week in the Roadshow, stay tuned for the updates!

Week 8

Week 8! This week, we have the first of our workshops from the [When Idea Meets Simple Technology] Series - Make an Android App. We have some new faces at SIGHT this time, as the workshop is led by Amogh, an exchange student from the University of New South Wales in robotics engineering. He's been living in Hong Kong since January this year and spends his spare time traveling, working on start-ups and playing the ukulele.

Amogh showed us around the MIT App Inventor 2, a great way to start with App developing, Campers and students were put through their paces, from simple apps such as the "meowing kitty" to the "vaccination tracker". And of course, how could we forget the cameo from our President Prof. Tony Chan!!!! He was asking us to "go to have tea with him", we'll see if we can sneak a video out!

Week 7

15/10/2015

Another week passes by at the SIGHT Camp and Campers are starting to up their game and come up with ideas for next semester. We have 2 teams working on diabetic retinopathy detection in Indonesia, 2 on healthy snacks for Cambodian kids, 2 on purifying water in Guizhou, 1 on helping rare disease patients in Hong Kong and 1 on hand sanitation in Cambodia. Yesterday they presented their first ideas and some do indeed look very promising! We shall have 2 prototyping workshops coming up in the coming 2 weeks, they are both full but check them out anyways!

SIGHT CAMP

is a 1-semester long non-credit bearing program, where SIGHT Campers are exposed to a myriad of global health issues via engaging with NGOs. Campers will follow-up on issues they find interest in, and from them develop solutions to solve these issues. The Camp is an accelerator of these ideas, providing workshops on design thinking, prototyping, product development, etc. The best ideas will stay and become fully-fledged SIGHT Projects in the Spring Semester.
